With just over six weeks of our epic adventure left we sadly leave Thailand and south east Asia for India today. It’s not that we are sad about going to India, far from it, but we have had such a great time here we just don’t want to leave. And of course it is coming to that time where we are going to have to start thinking about going home, going back to work (finding a job for me) etc etc things we haven’t thought about since we left home. I don’t expect anyone to have sympathy for us!

Huay Xai to Luang Prabang

We had a few options to chose from for this leg of the journey. We could have flown but that seemed a bit easy and too quick (and Lao airlines don’t have the best safety record). Some of the roads are unsealed and still under construction and are reportedly a bit bumpy to say the least. We could have also chosen the speed boat option (which looked like a plank of wood with an engine on the back) and crammed ouselves in with 8 or 10 other tourists with no room to move, inches from the water for a six hour whiteknuckle ride down the Mekong. We would have had to wear crash helmets in the speedboat when considering 95% of the population of this country seems to get around on motorbikes and no one wears a helmet, it suggested the speedboat may not be the safest way to travel.
